MEMBERS'S QUESTIONS

How do we weigh our newborn calves?

It's our first show. What do I clip?

QUESTION from Waid and Georgie Helyer, Lottmead Farm, Hanging Langford, Salisbury, UK: How do you prepare Australian Lowlines for showing? Do you clip up the tails? The head? the bellies? or nothing? What about the backs?

ANSWER from David Sainsbury (who is still learning to do it himself): Clipping is an art, not a prescription, and to a large degree depends on the individual animal's conformation.

Anyone with experience preparing English breeds should just follow the rules they already know.

As a beginner, I've had several demonstrations by experts, but probably don't learn as quickly as the youth members.

Personally, what I am finding the most helpful is the book "Beef Cattle Breeding, Feeding, and Showing" by Lucy Newham, an Australian stud stock breeder, exhibitor and judge. We bought Lucy's book after watching her expertise with Lowlines at the 2008 Sydney Royal Show.

Big cattle and little cattle, Lucy Newham has
prepared, shown and judged them all. Her book provides valuable information for those entering
the showing arena.

Lucy's book is written in lay person's terms and is very easy to understand. Most importantly, it explains what you should be trying to achieve and how to get there. I think I've finally clicked on to clipping through Lucy's book. The book includes selection, ration formulation, education, specialised fitting, pre-show preparation, transport, show routine and judging amongst many other things. It's full of practical suggestions and common sense and you can find it (as we did) online at the Rural Bookshop by searching on "Lucy Newham".Warning: If you live outside Australia, contact them by email first or arrange for a friend in Australia to get it for you, since the online bookshop is not set up for overseas sales.
